Damaged Braces Hardware Needs Timely Repair

Every set of braces installed is designed with durable hardware and strong dental adhesive. While this affords your braces the strength to bite and chew common foods, there are still some things that bend, damage or loosen parts of your braces.

The suction created by chewing gum or eating sticky foods can potentially pull a bracket or spacer out of position. At the same time, eating hard foods can also bend wires and damage braces hardware. If something does happen to your braces, delaying attention can have serious ramifications.

When your braces were originally installed, we gave you a piece of special orthodontic wax. If something sharp is threatening to wound your tongue, cheek or gums, you should secure it inside the orthodontic wax. If need be, you can improvise with a piece of pencil eraser or another firm substance.

You should never attempt to repair a damaged or bent piece of hardware. All repair and reinstallation procedures should be left to the orthodontic specialists at our clinic.

If you’ve got an adjustment session scheduled and a spacer falls out, you should call our office for advice. This is usually a sign that your teeth are ready for the next adjustment and we might simply recommend scheduling an earlier appointment.

If any part of your braces hardware is loosened or damaged, you should call 614-888-8070 to have it examined and repaired as soon as possible. We are always here to help with any questions or concerns you may have pertaining to your orthodontic care.
